Project Brief:

ParkPulse's intention is to help create a better experience during a user's commute. Through assumptions, research, and a competitive analysis during the Define and Ideation phase, the user needs were concluded to be a more cost-effective commute, a way to eliminate excess loss of time, and a more time-efficient way to park to reach their destination on time.

Problem:

Driving to large downtown capitals and the return of office jobs since the pandemic causes issues among city infrastructure including congested traffic and parking problems. While 54 hours of lost time per year is attributed to traffic congestion, 80% of users also feel that parking is a hassle when commuting downtown. Additionally, the nature of urban infrastructure with one-way streets, increase of bike lanes, and insufficient signage makes downtown commuting and driving difficult.

Context:

  • Target Users: City drivers, especially those who value time and are impatient to get around town who just want a seamless and convenient experience finding a parking spot when commuting to work.

  • User Needs: Users need a cost-effective way to commute, save time and eliminate any excess loss of time in traffic, and find a time-efficient way to park.

  • Constraints: Users feel annoyed when searching for parking in general, creating a lack of demand for the need of a mobile parking app.

  • Role: UX/UI Designer — responsible for research, user flows, visual design, and interaction design.

Process:

  • Research: Users need a cost-effective way to commute, save time and eliminate any excess loss of time in traffic, and find a time-efficient way to park.

  • Competitive Analysis: Audited similar apps (ParkMobile, SpotHero)

  • User Flow Mapping: Created simplified flows for finding a parking spot, reserving a spot, and navigation map.

  • Wireframing: Sketched and prototyped screens (Home, Map, Reservation, Credit System)

  • Visual Design: Developed a bold, minimal UI system with rich colors, consistent icons, and a seamless onboarding experience in Figma.

Proposal:

After conducting user interviews, preparing an affinity diagram, and outlining an Eisenhower Matrix to understand a user's empathy while commuting, ParkPulse offers 4 main features to improve the state of a user's desire to commute. ParkPulse offers on-the-go parking data that will adjust the user’s route based on their needs to save time and money. The second main feature will allow users to create custom commute presets that will adapt to their habits. The third main feature will contain a streamlined reservation system with integrated tap-to-pay, which offers an efficient reserve parking experience. The 4th main feature offers an in-app credit system that offers promotional discounts the more a user parks with ParkPulse to create a better overall app experience for the user.

Summary:

ParkPulse is a mobile app concept designed to improve the daily commute by addressing the stress of urban parking. Leveraging live data and personalized features, it aims to save users time and money while reducing frustration during downtown travel. Commuters face renewed challenges: heavy traffic, limited parking, complex city infrastructure, and poor signage. Research shows commuters lose an average of 54 hours annually to traffic congestion, and 80% identify parking as a major pain point in their commute. Through user interviews, competitive analysis, and empathy tools like affinity diagrams and an Eisenhower Matrix, key user needs emerged:

  • More cost-effective commutes

  • Less wasted time searching for parking

  • Reliable, time-efficient parking options near destinations

ParkPulse provides a tailored commuting experience with four main features:

  1. Custom Commute Presets – adapts to individual habits and routines.

  2. Live Parking Data & Smart Routing – adjusts routes dynamically to minimize delays and costs.

  3. Integrated Reservation & Tap-to-Pay – simplifies parking with quick reservations and payments.

  4. In-App Credit System – rewards frequent users with discounts and promotions.
