Project Brief:

Cozmo Smart Hub aims to create a more seamless and consistent smart home experience by addressing the widespread fragmentation across modern smart devices. Through research, user pain-point analysis, and competitive evaluation, it became clear that users need a universal hub to control their devices. By reducing the complexity of managing multiple apps, Cozmo Smart Hub focuses on delivering a simplified, app-first ecosystem that centralizes all smart home functions, offering users a more intuitive, reliable, and time-efficient way to manage their connected environments.

Problem:

The convenience of modern technology often is the highlight for smart devices, however; the fragmentation and inconsistent user experience are often the deep pain points. Nearly half of U.S. households now own at least one smart device, with younger consumers (ages 18–34) making up 59% of the market. On average, users interact with 4.8 different smart device types, each with its own app, UI rules, setup flow, and learning curve. This overly complex ecosystem leads to frustration, poor interoperability, and a steep barrier to creating a seamless automated home.

Context:

  • Target Users: Homeowners, especially those who are tech-savvy and finds ways to make technology benefit their hard-working lives.

  • User Needs: Users need a streamlined ecosystem experience to make sure all of their devices function seamless and properly.

  • Constraints: Users feel overwhelmed with the number of ecosystem choices and devices in the market.

  • Role: UX/UI Designer — responsible for research, user flows, visual design, and interaction design.

Process:

  • Research: Users have a desire for simplicity, reliability, and seamless integration across different devices.

  • Competitive Analysis: Audited similar ecosystems (Amazon, Google)

  • User Flow Mapping: Created simplified flows for turning on/off devices and sending commands.

  • Wireframing: Sketched and prototyped dashboard screens across different devices (Hub, Mobile and Wearable app)

  • Visual Design: Developed a simplistic and accessible UI and Agentic AI that makes integrating multiple devices seamless in one large ecosystem.

Tech specs/requirements

Cozmo Smart Hub

A shared network that can simplify Cozmo device setup and help your device reconnect to your Wi-Fi router when you update your password or network name. It uses a small portion of your internet bandwidth to provide these services to you and your neighbors, and is enabled on your device unless you have previously disabled the setting.

Data Inputs: Touch (through screen), Voice (through Mics), Environmental Data (e.g. temperature)

Connectivity: Dual-band Wi-Fi (802.11 a/b/g/n/ac), (2.4 and 5 GHz) networks. Bluetooth, Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) support for audio streaming. Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) for voice control.

Sensors: Microphone Array. OS: Linux-based, open-source. Hardware: Chipset, Speakers, Touchscreen. Compatibility: Must communicate securely via Wi-Fi. Privacy features: Wake word technology, streaming indicators, microphone off button. Accessibility features: vision, hearing, mobility, and speech. Set up: Wi-Fi simple setup enables customers to connect smart devices to their Wi-Fi network. Alerts & Notifications: Sends real-time notifications to the hub with haptic/visual feedback.

Mobile/tablet app - control surface

The primary remote for the hub. Visual management of the system, settings, and connected devices.

Adaptive Dashboard: Will display "predictive" routines based on user preferences and learned time-of-day habits (e.g. "Play a Movie" when it's 8 PM).

Operating Systems: iOS, Android. Platform: Smartphones, tablets. Compatibility: Native Bluetooth connectivity.

Watch/wearable app - peripheral touchpoint

Demonstrate contextual continuity and micro-interaction by demonstrating one cross-device handoff flow (e.g., start on watch, continue on phone). Emphasize glanceable or ambient feedback (haptic, visual, or biometric cues).

Ambient Feedback: A secondary remote to the hub/continuity of the flow. Haptic and visual feedback through reminders based on the command.

Operating Systems: watchOS, Wear OS. Hardware: Microphone, haptic motor, small OLED/LCD display. Compatibility: Dependent on the mobile phone's Bluetooth connection.

AI agent (conversational interface)

Agentic AI: Will feature a male or female (user's preference) that has a soft and subtle tone.

Anticipation: Through understanding the user's routine (e.g. the user always requests traffic data at 7 AM).

Ambient Agent: Constantly in passive mode, awaiting the wake word. Becomes engaging when the user sends a command or delivers a time-sensitive alert.

Software: Proprietary LLMs, cloud-based. Compatibility: Must have ultra-low latency connection to the hub (component 1).

Human-in-the-loop

System Automates: Resume music/media after a brief interruption, Reminders.

User Control: Routines, Control Panel, Layout, Commands.

Software: User management systems. Hardware: Physical button to control mic mute.

Proposal:

The Cozmo Smart Hub links smart home devices into one orchestrated system centered on simplicity, predictability, and cross-device coherence. With the evolution of smart devices, there’s never a jack-of-all trades when it comes to smart automation. However, to create the best user experience, emphasizing the importance of simplicity is key to preventing dissatisfaction. Through one hub, one app, and one assistant, users can manage all devices with consistent interaction patterns and personalized automation.

Summary:

Cozmo Smart Hub is a comprehensive smart home ecosystem focused on clarity, ease of use, and connected intelligence. Through a central hub, adaptive mobile app, wearable touchpoints, an anticipatory AI agent, and a human-in-the-loop approach, the system resolves the fragmentation that is seen in modern ecosystems. The result is a smart home experience that finally feels seamless.

Impact:

Cozmo Smart Hub demonstrates how multi-device orchestration can transform the smart home into a seamless, trustworthy environment. By unifying fragmented experiences, Cozmo Intelligent Ecosystem:

  • Improves predictability

  • Enhances cross-device continuity

  • Supports accessibility

  • Creates a coherent, modern interaction model
